the sweet spot

Our species, Homo sapiens, was named by the eighteenth-century taxonomists after the Latin word sapere, originally meaning “to taste” or “to have flavour” and then later “to know.” Perhaps these taxonomists understood that humans, beneath language, culture, and reason, are sensualists of the tongue.
